Republicans who support former President Donald Trump are criticizing the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday as an example of federal overreach and pledging to look into it.
The FBI’s action is a component of a Department of Justice investigation into Trump’s retention of records that he was required to give over to the National Archives and Records Administration after leaving office.
Trump revealed the search in a statement on Monday night, stating that earlier that morning, investigators had searched his Palm Beach, Florida, club and residence.
Leading Republicans in the House are requesting more openness from the DOJ and FBI in the wake of the search. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, promised to open an inquiry in a statement on Monday evening.
The House Judiciary and Oversight committees’ Republican members are looking forward to hearing from DOJ and FBI representatives this week.
